Well it depends on whose farming them...Here is the scoop, most commericial farms like the ones that sell to the big supermarkets, use hens that are ex egg layers that no longer produce to due to over production of eggs. some farms not in the egg business buy meat chickens hens. The go from egg to table in three months. The grow extra fast and fat, at about 3 months their legs are not able to support the fatness of the body and they break thus you know they are ready to eat. Now country folk who raise their own meat, use hens for eggs and only eat them when they don't produce any longer or they also buy special meat hens for killing, I know several people who have egg layers and meat chickens they slaughter and freeze. Now the rule as a country folk is you eat the roosters, they are worthless otherwise. But you want to eat them young otherwise they are tough. If you want to know more about the way we farm food in this country I recommend FOOD INC. great movie. We used to live next to a commercial chicken farm for 5 years. If I hadn't been a vegetaraian when I got there already that would have made me one. As it is if I did ever eat meat again I would NEVER eat chicken grossest, dirtiest, eat anything muther fuckers, not a good food item IMHO.

It doesn't really matter unless you grow the turkeys yourself and know they are safe to eat but they are weird birds like giant chickens. My neighbors raise two every year Thanksgiving and Christmas. Just said the other day "ugh weird birds".
